Apple, Changing The World Of Online Music

On Jan. 6, San Francisco’s Moscone convention center pulses with all the energy of a rock concert. A crowd sprinkled with hip-hop teenagers, digerati, and aging hippies streams in to hear the annual state-of-the-Mac keynote from Apple Computer Inc. Chief Executive Steven P. Jobs. Every facet of the event bears the fingerprints of the obsessive Jobs – right down to the music that fills the air. This year, it’s the King himself, Elvis Presley. Later, Jobs rolls the tape of Apple’s famous “1984” ad that ran on Super Bowl Sunday that year – and hasn’t been broadcast since. Only this… Read more »

Hearing Delayed in Jackson-Universal Suit

A judge delayed a hearing Wednesday in Michael Jackson’s lawsuit against Universal Music Group that claims the world’s largest record company owes the pop star royalties for the rerelease of songs he made in the 1970s. Superior Court Judge Emilie H. Elias set a March 9 hearing date to rule on UMG’s motion for summary judgment on the case. The judge dismissed two of the singer’s claims, and the company is asking her to rule against him in the remaining eight claims. The judge also said she would rule at the hearing on a request from Jackson’s side to review… Read more »

After Simple Plan finish their 2004 headlining tour, the French Canadian pop punkers will hit the studio to work on their second record. And they won’t be starting from scratch. Satellite Radio Extends Its Orbit

Radio is awesome, isn’t it? It’s free, it’s on whenever you want it, and you can choose from among eight or 10 stations. About the only people who could possibly complain about it, in fact, are people who have to listen to it. They’ll tell you that the music you hear on the radio is mostly the same cloying pop junk, played over and over. That 20 minutes of every hour is ads, played over and over. And that as you drive, the signal comes and goes with the territory. Two years ago, two companies – XM and Sirius –… Read more »
