Sharon Osbourne – Interview

Admit it. You loved the hell out of “The Osbournes” when it first came on. Sure, it’s worn out it’s welcome mat over the years, but Monday marks the final, final, final episode. We called Sharon Osbourne to chat about the end of an era and why the heck Dr. Phil makes a cameo appearance on the finale. Here’s what the tart had to say: Ohmygosh. I can’t believe it’s really going to be over. (Laughs.) Can you believe it? No, can you? Yes, it’s time, you know? Why? You have to end on top. You can’t milk it. The… Read more »

'Idol' Judges Mostly Roast Singers

Los Angeles – Maybe Mario Vazquez suspected the “American Idol” judges would be in a foul mood this week. On Tuesday night’s show, Randy Jackson managed to be as dismissive as Simon Cowell, who remained true to form. And even Paula Abdul – yes, sweetie pie Paula – turned a bit sour. “That was very safe and boring,” she said of Carrie Underwood’s performance of “When Will I Be Loved,” inflicting serious wounds, or at least paper cuts. Jackson employed a scalpel. “That definitely sounded like I was in a bad hotel,” he said of Anthony Fedorov’s “Breaking Up is… Read more »

'Hilary Duff Is A Loser And A Chicken,' Harvard College Paper Says

Hilary Duff might be taking classes at Harvard, but that doesn’t mean her fellow students have to like it. In an editorial published last week in The Crimson, Harvard’s school newspaper, the staff lambastes Duff, calling her a “loser and a chicken” because she didn’t go through Harvard’s notoriously difficult undergraduate-admissions process and won’t be participating in campus activities. Duff is not a student at Harvard proper, but is auditing courses through the Harvard Extension School, a continuing-education program that allows the singer to take a few classes online, including environmental science, government, and sociology. While Duff has noted on… Read more »

Brian 'Head' Welch Hopes Solo Music Will Fund Skate Parks

Now that Brian “Head” Welch has discovered Christianity, and changed his title from “founding Korn guitarist” to “former Korn guitarist,” he feels like there’s nothing left to explain to the band’s fans. But he’s always open to a good conversation. “When it was first announced that I was leaving the band and rededicating my life to Christianity, I thought it was weird that people thought it was weird,” he said. “And rather than maybe giving Christ a chance, people just start trashing my decision, because they’re afraid of taking that chance. If people cared about me, they would sit down,… Read more »

50 Cent And The Game – Doomed From The Very Beginning?

You know the saying “you’re always the last to know”? On Monday evening, radio listeners in New York were privy to news that the G-Unit were severing ties with the Game before he even knew. Late that afternoon, Game had been a guest of Hot 97’s Angie Martinez and downplayed the rumors of problems between himself and 50 Cent. Simultaneously, 50 and the rest of the G-Unit were telling a different story on rival station Power 105.1. “Where does he stand with your camp?” Power 105.1’s Ed Lover asked 50. “Across the street or around the corner,” he answered. “He’s… Read more »

Mars Volta's Conceptual Album Speaks Volumes

For an album about a mute, the latest Mars Volta opus sure has a lot to say. It’s a concept album of sorts, but since nothing with the Mars Volta is ever simple, Frances the Mute isn’t a concept easily explained. Not that the band won’t try. Instead of looking at the upcoming album as an idea, they see it as a character, a resurrected body based on the thoughts of a stranger seeking to find his adopted parents, written in a diary found by former bandmember Jeremy Ward (who later died in 2003) while working as a repo man.… Read more »

Previewing the CD's End

Classic-rock fan George Petersen doesn’t need another copy of Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” or Cream’s “Disraeli Gears.” He has spent the past four decades buying and re-buying his favorite music in a succession of new formats: vinyl, 8-track, cassette, compact disc, Super Audio CD, DVD-Audio. Enough is enough. The basement is full. “We as consumers have been trained by the music industry to go out and buy a new piece of plastic every few years,” said the 51-year-old Petersen, editorial director of Mix, a San Francisco-based magazine that covers professional sound recording. “Why do we keep buying… Read more »

Indecency Debate Heats Up in Washington

Washington – A year after Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction at the Super Bowl, all the excitement surrounding indecent content this year seems to be taking place in Washington, D.C. Among recent developments: The House is considering indecency legislation that would authorize $500,000 fines for broadcast licensees and performers, as well as license revocation hearings for repeat violators. The bill easily passed the Energy and Commerce Committee Feb. 8 and now goes to the floor for almost certain approval. Phil Lombardo, joint board chairman of the National Assn. of Broadcasters, is charging the Federal Communications Commission with inconsistent and discriminatory indecency… Read more »
