Sofya Wang knows how to write anthems for the weekend. Inbox Jukebox Presents is lighting up thanks to a trifecta of new songs from the electro-pop artist. The EP’s trio of tracks go off with a bang, powered by smooth synths and commanding guitars. Just when you think you’ve got a handle on her style, she surprises you and flips you the metaphorical bird in the process.
“No Fire” starts off slow, creeping along with emotion-fueled vocals that float high above the song’s synth-etic heartbeat, before exploding into a chorus destined to be permanently etched in your brain. “I wrote ‘No Fire’ when I was freaking out in a relationship, but it’s okay…all is well now,” Sofya explains. It’s a deeply introspective song full of sadness and confusion but the way Sofya wears her heart on her sleeve turns “No Fire” into so much more than a lament. “I’m thrilled when people tell me they can relate to this song—sad, but it’s cool to share such a specific feeling/situation with people.”
“I’m living life and want to continue to share my melodical mouth-sound stories with everyone – hope you all enjoy. :)”
The next song, “Great Big Show”, is definitely something we all have mixed feelings over right now. “I actually wrote ‘Great Big Show’ after everyone unhinged from the Net Neutrality vote,” she says. The song plays out like a circus show tune, complete with striking drums, exuberant piano and showstopping vocals. It strikes a chord with the current climate in society—one of catastrophe as the world watches through the gloss of their screens. “I thought, damn, there’s so much to freak out about these days. What is going on? It’s a dig at today’s politicians and reflects that ‘man, is the world is ending?’ kind of vibe.”
Remember when we said she’d surprise you at every turn? She ain’t done yet. “Found Love” is the icing on the cake, a smooth ’n’ sweet pop song that’ll sweep you away from the pain of the past. The breathy vocals uplift you high into the clouds while the guitars come in like flashes of lightning to remind that, when Sofya Wang feels something, she feels it deeply and she’s gonna bring you along for the ride. “I’m living life and want to continue to share my melodical mouth-sound stories with everyone – hope you all enjoy. :)”
Fun fact about the EP:
“Originally for these tracks, I was going for pop/rnb vibes, but after 3 days of writing over 20 songs, not sleeping, and questioning what direction I wanted to go, I decided to work at a much slower pace. I started with piano and guitar—I wrote lyrics as Tim (Timothy Vickers) played with cool chord progressions, and at that point, I was really able to tap into what I was feeling at the moment… ‘No Fire’ was the first of the batch started using this method, and it took a day to make the track. We reproduced everything and re-recorded with [producer] Aris [Archontis]. I’m really excited for the world to hear this material!”
