The past year has been a wild ride and Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Stolar has found a creative way to deal with it. His year-long Raw Emotions project has captured everything he’s been feeling in musical form, releasing new music each month tied to a specific emotion. Stolar originally created the project as an outlet for his struggles with bipolar disorder and depression. The songs are deeply personal snapshots of his life but each theme reaches out like Raw Emotions was a diary written just for you.
Beginning last October, Stolar takes you high with Desire: “Kurt Cobain T-Shirt” is a rush of upbeat synths and pure rhythm that makes you want to hit the dancefloor and hit up the one who makes your heart race. November’s “Space Left Between” (Invisible) is the morning after when you wake up and wonder what went wrong. The seductive beats set to echoing fingersnaps mark the seconds you’ve been apart from your one & only.
The emotions rise and fall with the seasons; December’s “Back Where You Belong” (Hopeful) rolls into January’s “Erase You” (Regret) like a new year’s resolution pushed to its limit. By the time the Nostalgia of March comes around you’ll be a world away from where you started. “Suburbia” is the butterflies of that first crush, the thrill of sneaking out, the days painted gold in your memory. Excitement/Anxiety brings you back to earth, feet planted firmly on the ground, on a path to who-knows-where. It’s terrifying but also exhilarating and “Grow Up” celebrates the dichotomy with a tripped-out song that flows right through you. From indie to dance and synth-pop to R&B, Raw Emotions jumps genres to create a soundtrack for every mood.
“I’m proud to embrace the lack of control over my emotions and continue to be shocked by the unpredictable power of our minds,” Stolar writes in one of the project’s monthly blog updates. Raw Emotions lets you feel every kind of impulse that makes us human; no hiding, no faking, only honesty. You’ll get lost inside Stolar’s mind, tracing the threads of each creative process and living out the moments of the past year that inspired him most. Most of all, you’ll be reminded why we all connect so deeply with music in the first place: Raw Emotions is about finding that voice that speaks to you like no other and Stolar has our full attention.
