Netflix You Characters If They Were Albums

With the final season of Netflix’s You causing quite a stir on the internet since its launch last Thursday, April 26, we’re putting our own spin on bidding the series farewell. Record spin, that is. The main character, Joe Goldberg, played by Penn Badgley, is a man of too-many-to-keep-track-of contradictions. Bookish yet brutal, romantic yet ruthless. Across five seasons of You, each of Joe’s love interests reveals a different shade of his psyche and a different version of deeply disturbing obsession. But what if we soundtracked their stories? Below, we’ve paired each of his partners with the album that best… Read more »

Green Day in the Studio with Nirvana Producer

Confirming news that Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson let slip recently on “The Carson Daly Show,” Green Day is in the studio with veteran producer Butch Vig working on the follow-up to 2004’s “American Idiot.” In a video posted over the weekend on YouTube, the band is seen in the control room as the camera pans over to Vig, who smiles and extends his middle finger. Instrumental bits of two new songs are heard in the background. Vig is best known for his work on Nirvana’s “Nevermind” but has also logged time behind the boards with Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth,… Read more »

Foo Fighters, Good Charlotte Usher In Summer Concert Season

Baltimore – If you find yourself surrounded by 40,000 fans, 40 bands, three stages and 85 degrees, you’ve apparently waded chest-deep into the summer concert season. For years, folks east of the Mississippi have welcomed the start of that season at the HFStival, now staged in Baltimore after thriving for 15 years as a Washington, D.C., staple. Quite a bit’s changed since WHFS-FM started ushering in the arrival of summer – most notably the station itself, which disappeared from the dial earlier this year. It has since resurfaced as an online entity and also takes over Baltimore’s Live 105.7 on… Read more »

Garbage Breakup Ends With New LP – If They Did Actually Break Up

SANTA MONICA, California – It’s been awhile since we’ve heard from Garbage, but don’t worry, they didn’t break up. Or maybe they did. “It depends on which one of us you ask,” bassist/guitarist Steve Marker said during a recent visit from their Madison, Wisconsin, home base to Los Angeles. “I think we took a break, but some of us think that we broke up, so we haven’t even resolved that yet. We should probably talk about that. It got pretty weird between the four of us, and the music wasn’t really happening, so we took a break. There were times… Read more »

Jakalope, It Dreams – CD Review

It Dreams (Orange/Universal) Canadian-made industrial-lite outfit Jakalope is actually made up of 39 people. This is a problem, especially considering that most of those 39 people – including Dave “Rave” Ogilvie, Trent Reznor, Phil Caivano (Monster Magnet), Kat Bjelland (Babes In Toyland), Thom D’Arcy (The Carnations), three-quarters of Sloan, most of the Orange Record Label roster, plus loads more – should really know better. With so many quality chefs labouring away in the kitchen, it’s remarkable that so much of It Dreams manages to sound undercooked, flavourless and stale – mannered beats, freeze-dried riffs and a musical aesthetic stamped with… Read more »

BT Secretive About 'NSYNC Payback On Upcoming Album

BT is hesitant to reveal that his new album features a collaboration with JC Chasez, but not because he’s worried about ruining his dance-music credibility. “I’ve been playing it in my sets and I’m top secret about who it is, ’cause I want people to judge it on the song, not the whole ‘NSYNC affiliation,” the DJ/producer explained Friday at his home studio. “People go f–ing nuts, even my super cool friends that would never admit to [liking ‘NSYNC]. They’re like, ‘Wow, this is such a great tune.’ And I’m like, ‘It’s JC.’ And they’re like, ‘Shut the f– up,’… Read more »

No Doubt, Garbage, Distillers Tour Starts In October (Good Charlotte On Three Dates)

If it weren’t for Good Charlotte filling in three dates for Garbage, it could have been called the Just a Girl tour. Three of the hardest-rocking women in music will join forces when their bands – No Doubt, Garbage and the Distillers – hit the road together in October. Pop-punkers Good Charlotte will take Garbage’s spot for the first three dates, before Shirley Manson and her cohorts hit the tour October 15 in West Kingston, Rhode Island. Interspersed with the tour, No Doubt will play three dates with the Rolling Stones in Detroit, Toronto and Atlanta. Gwen Stefani’s band is… Read more »

Alanis highlights a sorry Silent Night – Review

Star 98.7’s Not So Silent Night certainly won’t be remembered as the most exciting local holiday concert this year, especially considering the high ticket price and modest artist lineup, though attendees were treated to a sneak of Alanis Morissette’s upcoming third U.S. studio album. The commercial decline of headliner Garbage gave the sold-out event an anticlimactic air. The show opened with the modern folk-rock stylings of singer-guitarist Nelly Furtado, who drew cheers for her hip-hop cover of Missy Elliott’s “Get Ur Freak On,” followed by the bland, middle-of-the-road efforts of New Orleans band Better Than Ezra, who at least included… Read more »
