Electric Love EPSerena Ryder Label: Atlantic Records Released: 05.26.17 Review by Alex Bear | June 2, 2017 at 12:00 PM
“A lot of people say that one’s a lonely number
But I’m skipping to the beat, and I’m the only drummer”
Females are strong as hell, and Serena Ryder is living proof. When the world seems to be going backwards, the Canadian singer-songwriter’s EP Electric Love is the new battle cry to keep us marching forward.
“Got Your Number” lights the EP on fire from the get go, swing-infused choruses and badass quips signalling it’s time to declare that one toxic relationship sooooo over. If you weren’t stomping your feet by now, you will be the second “Revival” takes over. West Side Story is brought to mind—you know the scene—only even more intense; you’ll be striding ’round town like you own the place, snapping your fingers as you go.
Electric Love lives up to its name: electro synth vibes weave in and out on the Tegan & Sara sounding “Me and You”, but really come to the forefront on the title track, which features an almost annoyingly catchy hook that simply won’t leave your head. In fact, the whole EP is about to take up a whole lotta space in your brain—Ryder’s voice is incredibly powerful, layered over soulful pop tracks with a dance-rock tinge designed to pull you in.
This record is for all the nights you’re set to take on the world with your best friends; for the rainy days where all you need is a good book, a piano-led ballad, and a bay window to keep you content; for the butterflies in your stomach when you’re on your way to see your one and only. But most importantly, this EP will leave you feeling empowered and ready for anything—because Electric Love is a snapshot of life in all its highs and lows, and the picture’s looking damn pretty.
Buy it, Stream it, or Skip it: Buy it, and feel safe in the knowledge there’s more to come: look out for more tracks to add to the collection with her forthcoming full-length Utopia!
