The fate of a Dublin studio used by U2 that was set for demolition was to be reconsidered Tuesday (January 29), thanks in part to an online petition signed by more than 2,000 fans of the Irish rock group, Reuters reports. The Dublin Docklands Development Authority was to discuss the fate of the Hanover Quay studio, at which U2 recorded its latest album, All That You Can’t Leave Behind.
Last year, the property had been earmarked for razing as part of a redevelopment project. But a document carrying 2,146 signatures helped shed light on the local landmark. Petition instigator Fintan Kennedy even likened the studio to London’s Abbey Road, home to the Beatles’ recordings, and Memphis’s Sun Studios, at which the earliest, influential recordings of Elvis Presley and others were captured.
“U2…are…the band of my generation, just like the Beatles or Elvis were to other generations,” Kennedy told the Irish Times.
