Trailer for '8 Mile,' Starring Eminem and Directed by Curtis Hanson, Debuts

Universal Pictures and producer Brian Grazer are proud to debut the teaser trailer for the gripping new drama “8 Mile,” directed by Oscar ® winner Curtis Hanson and starring rap superstar Eminem.

The teaser trailer, which offers a first glimpse into this highly anticipated film as well as a portion of a new song by Eminem entitled “Cleaning Out My Closet,” will make its broadcast debut on “Access Hollywood” on Wednesday, December 19. It will subsequently air on BET’s “NY/LA” on Friday, December 21. Please check local listings for broadcast information on both shows. On Friday the 21st, the teaser trailer will make its theatrical debut as well, seen as a coming attraction with selected films nationwide.

“From visiting the set and viewing early footage, I have seen that Eminem is delivering a powerful, honest, mature performance in ‘8 Mile,”‘ says producer Brian Grazer. “He is bringing the same intensity to acting as he devotes to his music. Curtis Hanson is doing an incredible job, and I believe this will be a riveting, dynamic film come next summer.”

“When we first came to Detroit, our hope was that a title would present itself that was specific both to the city and to the story we were going to tell,” explains director and producer Curtis Hanson. “The people in Detroit know 8 Mile as the city limit, a border, a boundary. But there is a dividing line that separates each of us from where we want to be and who we want to be. We all have our own 8 Mile.”

In the film, Jimmy Smith, Jr. (Eminem) is stuck at the wrong end of that road and can barely get from his mom’s trailer to his factory job, let alone out of town. Sometimes Jimmy thinks 8 Mile will kill him, but the raw pain of being there can also lead him to a place inside himself where he calls the shots – through his music.

“8 Mile” is a provocative fictional examination of a critical week in Jimmy’s life. Academy Award ® winner Curtis Hanson (“Wonder Boys,” “L.A. Confidential”) directs 8 Mile from an original screenplay by Scott Silver. Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment is producing “8 Mile,” along with Hanson and Jimmy Iovine. “8 Mile” is scheduled for release in summer, 2002.

Kim Basinger (“L.A. Confidential”) portrays Jimmy’s mother, the fictional Stephanie. Mekhi Phifer (“O,” “Shaft”), Brittany Murphy (“Don’t Say A Word”) and Eugene Byrd (“Dead Man”) also star. Eminem will collaborate with Dr. Dre on the music for the film and soundtrack.
