Madonna Begins 12-City U.S. Tour In Philadelphia

Madonna’s Drowned World Tour began in Philadelphia Saturday night at the First Union Center with a performance of the song which gave the three-month tour its title.

The tour will travel to 12 U.S. cities and is sold out.

“I love Madonna. We’re going to two concerts, one here and one in New Jersey,” Theresa Svengert told Reuters Television.

The tour features material from her current multi-platinum CD, “Music”, as well as signature songs spanning the length of her career.

The North American tour follows her European tour, where fans seemed mesmerized by the extravagant stage sets and costumes.

Before the concert, fans lined up to buy expensive Madonna merchandise, with T-shirt prices hitting more than $100.

“I could’ve sold my ticket for $1,500, but it’s not worth it,” fan Trish Buck told Reuters.

Madonna calls her Drowned World Tour a theatrical representation of her music. On stage she uses inspiration from martial arts, flamenco, country and western, punk, rock and roll and the circus.

“I just flew in from Toronto this morning to see the show,” Dave Gardner told Reuters. “She’s not coming to Toronto this time and I’ve seen her live in Toronto before, so we flew in.”

“I am seeing the show tonight and tomorrow. Next month, I am going to Michigan to see the show. Best person, best performer ever, so you gotta see her on the tour,” he said.
