Coldplay is working on a live DVD of backstage, onstage and “stupid stuff,” according to the band’s bassist and de facto cameraman, Guy Berryman.
“We want to make it good, not do it for the sake of doing it,” Berryman says. “I know a lot of bands go, ‘Oh, let’s just do a DVD,’ and get a film crew and they film it and record music and stick it out. I’d like to do something a bit more interesting than that.”
Berryman, the man behind the camcorder, has been gathering footage as the U.K. band tours behind its latest album, A Rush of Blood to the Head. “I take loads of stuff,” he says. “I’ve got about 200 hours of making the last record [Parachutes] as well. I don’t film everything because it just gets boring after a while. You get the same things – here’s another dressing room, oh, another dressing room!”
At the band’s Toronto show, Berryman believes a crew member caught frontman Chris Martin sucking back helium from a balloon onstage in order to sing a couple of lines from “God Put A Smile Upon Your Face,” Chipmunk-style. He’s not certain what other goodies might have been caught on film. “I don’t usually watch it back,” he says. “When a tape finishes I put it in a box. It’s hard to have an opinion on what’s good footage hours after you’ve taken it. You have to forget about it and watch it back and see how you react to it because that’s when it’s good.”
Berryman plans to film for at least another year, before starting the editing process on what will become the final DVD. No release information has been set.
