The U.S. Legalized Same Sex Marriage, and Everyone Is Stoked On It
Unless you actually live under a rock you’re aware by now that SCOTUS in a 5-4 vote legalized gay marriage last week. As a brilliant friend of mine pointed out, we can finally just start calling it “marriage.” The U.S. finally joined the likes of Canada, Ireland, Mexico, and other countries who have legalized the institution nationwide, and rad photos of musicians in the scene celebrating with their friends, family members, and fans have flooded the interwebs. It was a pretty cool day to be an American. Let’s have more days like this, please.
J. K. Rowling Is Writing Potter-things Again!
Hang on… I need to go breathe into a paper bag… OK, I’m back. J.K. Rowling has decided to 
continue the Harry Potter story (it is NOT a prequel) and I think I cried just reading about it. The Wizarding World made such an impact on all of us 90’s children and millennials, and even just a little glimpse into a new story will be wonderful. Apparently, there will be a play called Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and it will be opening in London in 2016. BRB, looking at flights to London…
Jack’s Mannequin Might Play Some Everything in Transit Shows and I’m Going To Cry
If you know me, you know that I love love love Jack’s Mannequin. So, when I heard that he toldBillboard this past week there was the chance for him to play some Everything In Transit shows, I think I almost passed out. This album was a huge game changer me, and you know, for the band. Released in 2006, it has some of Jack’s most memorable songs, including “Dark Blue”, “Bruised”, and “The Mixed Tape.” We are all hoping this is true, because if it is, you will see me at every date of the tour.
What’s On My Mind This Week
Last week Taylor Swift got Apple to agree to pay artists during Apple Music’s three month free consumer trial. This was a huge step in the right direction for how artists SHOULD be treated by
streaming services. However, the Internet saw this as an opportunity to take Taylor Swift’s “social justice move for music” and put her on blast. Here’s the thing: artists, musicians, people who create products for people, have every right to deny their services to people who don’t pay them. It takes time (and money) to create things, and if the creator isn’t going to be compensated as they see fit, they should have the choice not to offer that product to the world. As a writer, specifically one who has been writing regularly since high school, I’ve learned that you have to work very hard for opportunities that get you actual money. I’ve had one paid writing job in my life, but even that was short-lived. I agree to do the things I do for the experience, and I love doing them. Swift just fought for all of your favorite artists and is going to get them paid for three months of streaming music. She just made it possible for smaller bands in our scene to not only see what a great tool Apple Music could be for them profit-wise, but how valued they are as artists, so let’s just chill on the Tay-Tay bashing, ok?
